Sonia Rash is a native Houstonian and the proud daughter of two working class parents. Her father was a Bookkeeper and her mother a Nurse. At an early age both parents instilled in her the importance of hard work and a commitment to always treat everyone with dignity, respect and fairness. She attended the High School for Performing Arts and upon graduation attended Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio where she received a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science. She then went on to continue her education by receiving a Master’s Degree in International Economics from St. Mary’s University in San Antonio.
Sonia is a proud Honors graduate of Texas Southern University’s Thurgood Marshall School of Law. She came out of Law School with a passion for helping the underdog and began her Law career as an associate with The Hall Law Firm where she dedicated herself to working for civil rights, personal injury, and complex litigation. Her desire to help others in a more personal setting led her to open up her own practice to handle cases in Civil, Criminal, Family, Municipal and Justice Courts. She is also an in-house counsel to two law firms and a non-profit where she works diligently to provide justice for her clients. Sonia is a licensed Lawyer in the State of Texas and she is federally licensed in the Southern District of Texas and for two decades has been a practicing Lawyer for clients in Harris, Fort Bend and the surrounding counties.
In the last two decades Sonia has been committed to serving the public and doing her best to make sure her clients, regardless of their station in life, have had equal access to the pursuit of justice and the right to be heard in a court of Law. In support of this goal she provides free legal clinics to indigent residents in Fort Bend and Harris County. Sonia has always had a special place in her heart for public service, justice and volunteerism. For as long as she can remember she has always wanted to be involved with organizations that help those in need. While in High School she toured with “Teatro Bilingual of Houston” performing for working and low-income families. As a college student she became a student ambassador and was involved in bringing community leaders to campus. While working on her Master’s degree in Economics, she worked for “The Coalition for Justice in the Maquiladoras” to fight for equal pay and gender equality for workers of American companies in border towns of Texas.
Because of the work she did on campus she received the prestigious Presidential Award and numerous other recognitions for her achievements. Sonia also worked as a Lake Ambassador and Resident Assistant to ensure that her fellow college students’ needs were being met. She is also proud to have been a freedom writer for Amnesty International.
Her personal mission statement is to “Work together in unity to strengthen the ties between all communities to build an environment based on love, faith, care and justice.” She has empowered this idea by serving on the Board of Directors for several non-profit organizations that help those in need. She serves on the LULAC Chapter 2911 as Vice-President, the Fort Bend NAACP as Third Vice-President, S.M.I.L.E as Committee Chair and on the Criminal Justice Reform Transitions Team as a chair for the Fort Bend County’s Sheriff’s Office policy reform initiative.
Fort Bend County has been Sonia’s home for over 13 years. She lives there with her husband Ron and daughters Reagan, a FBISD Sartaria Middle School student and MacKenzie, a FBISD Cornerstone Elementary School student.
As a parent volunteer at Cornerstone Elementary Sonia is a member of the PTA and Girl Scouts. She is proudly raising her two daughters to be confident, to have a strong work ethic and to always have compassion for others. As a daughter, sister, and mother of two, she knows the importance of giving back and helping to build a better society for future generations. During Covid-19 she helped provide necessities to the most vulnerable citizens in Fort Bend by assisting in helping to maintain their well-being and safety. Along with being a parent volunteer Sonia also volunteers with the Friends of Richmond, Angels with a Mission, the Missouri City NAACP, LULAC, Mission One and Literacy Buddy at Briargate Elementary
Community activism and grassroots organizing are things Sonia cares deeply about. Her favorite quote is by former President Obama, “The best education I received was working with people in the community on a grassroots basis. Because what it taught me was that ordinary people, when they are working together can do extraordinary things.”
